Benjamin Taylor ~1811-1863

I came across your genealogical research on the Gosling family some time ago and noted down the details you had found out about Benjamin Taylor (1811-1863) as I thought he was on my tree. I have done some more research and am now fairly happy that he is my great-great-great grandfather, but from his first marriage to Hester/Esther Cooke- Karin descended from their son John 1832 - rather than his second one to Catherine Morris which produced Mary Ann and Jane Taylor, who both married Gosling brothers.

I am afraid I haven't got any further back beyond Benjamin at present, but do have details of his older children with his first wife. The oldest of these is John Taylor,1832, my great-great grandfather, who like the Gosling families moved to Cardiff (but via Swansea and Newport rather than Bristol), and in fact John's second surviving son James ended up living up in Roath in Harold Street (with one of James' daughters marrying someone from 40 Bertram Street - straight across the road from 39 Bertram Street which figures in the Gosling families!). I haven't fully investigated all of Benjamin's older children yet, but as you can see from the attached tree (which is two bits that overlap side by side with my ancestors highlit in yellow and the Gosling ones in pink) Benjamin had several children with Hester before the James and Joseph who were found with Benjamin and Catherine in the 1851 census. I also think there was an extra daughter Eliza born in 1853 who was elsewhere at the 1861 census. Benjamin and Catherine (Kittty) seem to have done a bulk baptism for the three oldest children in 1853 (see attached baptism) and Eliza gives Benjamin as her (deceased) father on her marriage in 1872 (also attached).

Karin set up a groups.io site to give us somewhere to discuss/post information. We have based it on John Taylor who was born in 1832 in Corse and married Ellen Jones as that couple had John junior (my ancestor) and James (Chris H's ancestor).

If I remember correctly the Gosling link is one generation further back, with Benjamin Taylor's children (of whom John was one of the older batch and the sisters who married Goslings were of the younger 2nd marriage batch). However, if you or anyone else who is in touch with you about that part of the family wants to join our JohnTaylor1832 discussion group I'd be happy to send them an invite.

 

Born~1811, Corse [10 miles north of Gloucester] /Gloucester, from census. Father William Taylor ~1780- this from 1847 mc??.

No baptisms on FS, but he could well have a brother Edward born Corse ~1817 . No baptisms on FMP or Ancestry and no one with an Ancestry tree . Corse baptisms 1813-1830 available online: no Edward baptism and no baptisms to a William Taylor . Also Corse burials 1813-1840 - only Taylor is an Ann Taylor, aged 67, buried 1840. Also marriages 1754-1812- no Taylors

1847. Marries Catherine Morris b.1819 - his 2nd wife - in Gloucester Registry Office 17/10/1847. Source Karen North & Gill.. They also have Catherine's parents as James Morris~1787 & Mary Coal ~1787 m.Bishops Cleaves 14/11/1807, This m.c. would give his father : does Karin have it??

1863 Benjamin Taylor dies 24/6/1863 , Church Street, Barton St.Michael . Gloucester Jun 1863 . He would be aged ~51. He leaves a will, probate granted May 1864 . His widow Catherine is the universal legatee for life providing she does not remarry( but she does in 1865) . Effects under £100.

Cannot find Catherine in 1871C - youngest daughter Jane 14, is a servant, as is Eliza,17 . Cannot find a death for his wife Catherine Taylor. But there is a possible remarriage, Mar 1865, Gloucester, to George Johnson or Joseph Turner. Would need to search 1871C to determine if either of these were her husband. She does not die Sep 1875 Cheltenham, aged 56 is someone else, with probate .

I'm afraid I don't know much more about Catherine Morris / Taylor. Sorry about that. It's great to have learnt about her from your website and what Karin has written. I had a look on Ancestry the other day and I'd be pretty sure that she, Catherine Taylor, widow, married George Johnson in 1865. Her father's name is the same on the marriage certificate and one of the witnesses was Joseph Taylor, who would be her step son, born in 1844 - email from Chris Hunt, 18/9/2020

William Taylor . Supposed father of Benjamin , info. prob. from 1847 2nd marriage cert. for Benjamin & Catherine.[ does Gill have this?]

Just one Wiiliam Taylor 70 farmer , with wife Catherine 70 in Gloucestershire in 1841C, at Bisley, Stroud. . But the correct William could well be dead.
